Costumes are the point: think Santa, Mrs. Claus, elves or anything holiday-themed that you can move around in. Winter weather varies in Virginia, so choose layers over one heavy piece. Skip costume pieces that are hard to carry or that block other guests. Test the outfit at home so you know it stays put.

Arrive early enough to find your group, then take it one bar at a time. Wear comfortable shoes, because you will be on your feet. Respect each bar's rules and capacity limits. Follow local rules about open containers and walking between bars.

We do not list bar names here because venues are not confirmed in the data behind this page; the Norfolk event page is the place to look. Do not rely on posts from earlier years, since bars and routes can change. Check start information before you head out so you are not hunting for the group. Ask your group to pick a backup meeting spot in case you get separated.

Plan on a 21+ crowd, since the legal drinking age in Virginia is 21. Bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID in case you are asked to show it. Never drive after drinking; plan a ride before you go. Do not lend your ID to anyone, since it will not work for them.

SantaCon is a costumed holiday pub crawl, and the Norfolk edition follows that format. Details such as routes, perks and group rules differ from one city to the next, so do not assume Norfolk matches another city. The Norfolk event page holds the details that apply to this city. Going with friends makes it easier, since the night is more fun in a group.
